69th Descent of the Sella
In the 69th International Sella Descent, held in 2005, 833 paddlers from twenty different countries took part, once again showcasing its international and highly competitive character.
That year especially highlighted Julio Martínez, who secured his seventh victory on the Sella while occupying the rear seat in the K2 for the first time, proving his versatility as a paddler and his absolute dominance in Asturias’ premier canoe marathon. Alongside José Julián Becerro, they formed a perfect tandem that didn’t need to rely on controversial portaging tactics near the finish line—as had been seen in the previous edition—winning cleanly and decisively.
In the K1 category, Kiko Vega claimed victory, solidifying his place as one of the essential names in the Sella’s honors list. However, that year’s TVE broadcast drew criticism from participants and fans alike: it failed to show his win or the K1 podium live, sparking disappointment among followers of the race.
The 2005 Sella Descent once again displayed its festive and sporting spirit, with thousands of spectators lining the banks between Arriondas and Ribadesella, further cementing the event as one of the most popular and spectacular marathon canoe races on the international calendar.
