35th Descent of the Sella
The 1971 International Descent of the Sella broke participation records with 271 registered canoes, confirming its reputation as the most iconic canoeing event of the Asturian summer.
All eyes were on the Danish team, once again the favorites after their success in the previous edition, but this time fielding a new pair: S. Jörgensen and Mane Pape. Their powerful stroke and international experience made them clear contenders for victory.
The race unfolded with intensity and plenty of talking points. From the starting line in Arriondas, several lead groups formed, but the Danes imposed a strong, steady pace that allowed them to break away in the middle section of the course. Still, the local Asturian duo was determined not to let the foreign champions have it all their way: Luis Antonio Pérez and J. Díaz, representing Pravia, delivered an impressive comeback that electrified the crowds along the riverbanks.
At the finish line in Ribadesella, the spectators witnessed a thrilling finale: Jörgensen and Pape crossed first with a time of 1 h 19 min 20 s, securing a clear win but not without controversy.
Rumors swirled in the afternoon about the Asturian pair’s start: some claimed they didn’t depart from the same spot as the rest of the field or may have gained an unfair advantage. Although the race organizers issued no official penalties, the topic dominated conversations in Arriondas and Ribadesella throughout the day.
Despite the controversy, the local pair claimed second place less than a minute behind the winners, showcasing the quality of Asturian paddlers and adding to the local pride and passion.
