International Sella River Descent

1981

Descenso Internacional del Sella 1981

45th Descent of the Sella

A total of 753 boats and nearly 1,200 paddlers took part in the 45th edition of the International Descent of the Sella in 1981, reinforcing its status as a world-class event. A major highlight was the first-ever participation of Australia and New Zealand, adding further international prestige to the race.

Off the water, South Africa’s official exclusion due to apartheid led its top athletes to compete under other flags. Notably, the young Paul Chalupsky, son of the 1969 champion Paul Chalupsky, raced under the Belgian flag. His presence symbolized the complex political climate of the time while showcasing the high technical level of South African paddlers.

An event of historic significance and international spirit, where sporting competition blended with subtle acts of political resistance and global expansion.
