International Sella River Descent

1978

42nd Descent of the Sella

In 1978, the 42nd edition of the International Descent of the Sella was held, marked by the introduction of anti-doping controls for the first time in the race’s history. This milestone allowed the competition to be included in the Marathon Grand Prix, making it an official event of the international river marathon championship.

The river had a moderate flow, slightly lengthening the race and favoring the British team’s strong finish. The local pair Vivi and Labra (from Pravia) led much of the course with a solid strategy, but in the final stretch they struggled with the weight of water that had accumulated in their canoe, slowing them down.

The K2 victory went to the English duo Truran & Carlisle, who completed the course in 1 h 17 min 9 s. In K1, English paddler Tim Cornish also won, leading the British Canoe Union team to secure the overall team victory.

This 1978 edition is considered a turning point—not only for its international sporting character but also for introducing anti-doping controls and consolidating the Sella’s global relevance beyond its local roots.
