International Sella River Descent

1932

Descenso del Sella 1932

3rd Descent of the Sella

Originally conceived as a gathering of canoeists for an excursion from Arriondas to the metal bridge in Ribadesella (which at the time was a metal structure), the event was scheduled for late July.

There was debate over its nature: competition or excursion? Dionisio de la Huerta, the founder, preferred a non-competitive event, but there were two clear sides: the Gijón group and the Ribadesella group, both eager to compete.

Ultimately, they agreed whoever crossed first would be the winner. The canoe of César Sánchez Llano and Antón Durán (from Ribadesella) was Canadian-style and cost 800 pesetas (around 4 euros today), compared to 1200 pesetas (about 6.1 euros) for the Gijón team’s canoe.

That day, the course was completed in 1 hour and 53 minutes, with the Ribadesella pair César Sánchez Llano and Antón Durán taking the win.
