The Tritones del Sella are a festive group from Infiesto, though people from various towns join in—all united by their passion for the International Sella Descent, also known as the Fiesta de las Piraguas.
The group was founded by Rodrigo Fernández, Gonzalo Rosainz, and Tito Azcoitia, who first paraded under the name Los Tritones del Sella with the sole aim of filling this Asturian sporting and cultural celebration with color, music, and joy.
Origin and Evolution:
In its early days, the group’s activities began the day before the race. In Infiesto, they held a draw to decide the starting order and organized a lively parade featuring tritons, big-headed figures, giants, and the local brass band. The next day, the group would travel to Arriondas, leading the pre-Descent parade through the capital of the Parres municipality.
Inspired by the spirit of Dionisio de la Huerta, the group maintained around 20 participants until the 1990s. From then on, participation grew steadily, now exceeding a hundred members—firmly establishing Los Tritones del Sella as one of the most emblematic sellero groups in the event.
Cultural Heritage and Symbolism:
Los Tritones, also known as the “Guardians of the Sella River,” herald the festivities, energize the atmosphere, and symbolize the protection of the Sella’s waters before the start of the canoeing competition.
