International Sella River Descent

1950

14th Descent of the Sella

It’s not a mistake: the 13th Descent was never held. Out of superstition, organizers feared that using the number 13 would reduce public attendance. It was said it might be celebrated on the silver anniversary, but it never happened.

That year, the Fluvial Train reached its maximum capacity with 20 carriages, as railway regulations did not allow more—showing the event’s huge popularity.

An important milestone was the official inclusion of the Sella in the National Rowing Federation’s calendar, cementing its status as a top-tier sporting event. Also, for the first time, a promotional airplane appeared over Ribadesella, highlighting the growing marketing of the race.

In sporting results, the winners were Arturo Castro and Daniel Rodríguez from Gijón with their canoe “La Mula-Tada”, finishing in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 42 seconds.

En el plano deportivo, los vencedores fueron los gijoneses Arturo Castro y Daniel Rodríguez con su piragua “La Mula-Tada”, marcando un tiempo de 1 hora, 59 minutos y 42 segundos.
