International Sella River Descent

1956

20th Descent of the Sella

After the 1956 race, Dionisio de la Huerta announced that the Descent would no longer be held, causing concern among fans and organizers.

The reason was that the Rowing Federation’s regulations did not suit the unique needs of the Sella, leading to numerous meetings to find a solution. The result was the creation of the National Canoeing Federation, ensuring the race’s future. Dionisio became vice president and Ramón Cuétara served as secretary, solidifying the sport’s governance in Spain.

In sporting results, the Belgian pair De Waele and Merssman set a new record of 1 hour, 35 minutes, and 40 seconds, showcasing the event’s competitive level.

As a fun fact, the famous Real Madrid club participated, with Fausto García Dory winning the K1 category, adding an extra anecdotal touch to the Sella’s rich history.
