International Sella River Descent

The Kings

The Kings parade in the International Descent of the Sella year after year, representing the importance of monarchy in the history of Asturias.

For this very reason, Dionisio de la Huerta aimed to feature the thirteen Asturian monarchs in the parade.

Over the years, these have been the Asturian monarchs and the municipalities they represented in the Sella parade:

Pelayo (Cangas de Onís)

Pelayo or Pelagius in Latin, and Belai al-Rumi in Arabic (d. Cangas de Onís, 737), was the first monarch of the Kingdom of Asturias. Pelayo ruled for 19 years until his death.


Favila (Cangas de Onís)

Favila or Fáfila of Asturias (d. 739) was the second monarch of the Kingdom of Asturias, chosen after the death of his father (Don Pelayo). He took the name of his paternal grandfather, Duke Favila.


Aurelio (San Martín del Rey Aurelio)

Aurelio of Asturias (c. 740 – San Martín del Rey Aurelio, 774), son of Fruela of Cantabria, nephew of King Alfonso I, and brother of Bermudo I, was King of Asturias from 768 to 774.


Silo (Pravia)

Silo of Asturias (d. Pravia, 783) was King of Asturias from 774 to 783. He succeeded King Aurelio by marrying Adosinda, daughter of King Alfonso I the Catholic. He moved the court to Pravia and was a contemporary of Abd al-Rahman I, Umayyad Emir of Córdoba, and Charlemagne, King of the Franks.


Mauregato (Parres)

Mauregato (c. 719? – d. 789)was King of Asturias from 783 to 789. He was the natural son of King Alfonso I the Catholic and the Muslim slave Sisalda.


Ordoño (Piloña)

Ordoño I of Asturias (Oviedo, 821 – ibidem, 27 May 866) King of Asturias from 850 to 866, he was the son of King Ramiro I and the father of Alfonso III of Asturias.
