The International Descent of the Sella has three main categories: Men, Women, and Mixed.

Each year, hundreds of paddlers from Spain and around the world compete in this iconic race between Arriondas and Ribadesella.

Throughout its history, the Descent of the Sella has hosted athletes from over 15 countries, featuring elite clubs, world champions, and categories such as:

🚣 K1, K2, C1 and C2

👧 Junior, U23, Senior, and Veterans

🌍 Representation from countries like Spain, France, the UK, Sweden, Argentina, South Africa, and Hungary

Men can compete in Senior, Junior, Cadet, Veteran, and Centenary categories. Women compete in Senior, Junior, and Cadet, while Mixed crews race only in the Absolute category.

Types of boats used:

  • K1 (single paddler)

  • K2 (two paddlers)

  • C1 (single canoe)

  • C2 (two-person canoe)

  • RR (whitewater kayak without rudder)

  • SurfSki (for long-distance/open sea)

Starting positions are drawn by lot, with top seeds getting the best spots.

In recent editions, the event has consistently seen over 1,000 participants.
