Eastern Asturian Coast: Llanes, Beaches, and Blowholes

From the Beach to the Blowholes

The Eastern Asturian Coast is one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in northern Spain. From Bustio to Villaviciosa, this area combines the wildness of the Cantabrian Sea with seafaring traditions and unmatched natural richness.

It’s a strip of over 40 kilometers of coastline where you’ll find wild beaches, large sandy areas, cliffs, estuaries, blowholes, and coastal trails that let you see the mountains from the beach and vice versa.

Here you can enjoy activities like sea kayaking, surfing, or simply walking while listening to the roar of the sea—a unique experience that only Asturias can offer.

🔹 The Beaches of Llanes: Gems of the Asturian Coast

The municipality of Llanes, the heart of the Eastern Coast, is home to some of the best beaches in Asturias. Many of them were shaped by unique geological processes, and a recent study found that their sands come from the nearby Sella River.

Some must-see beaches:

  • Playa de la Ballota: an impressive natural viewpoint, perfect for observing the coast and the Andrín blowholes.

  • Playa de Toró: sand and rock formations that extend into the sea.

  • Playa de Poo: a natural pool ideal for families.

  • Torimbia: a wild, nudist beach with difficult access but unforgettable beauty.

  • Gulpiyuri: an inland beach declared a Natural Monument, located inland but fed by the sea through an underground crack.

  • Guadamía: the natural border between Llanes and Ribadesella. From here you can reach the Pría blowholes, a natural spectacle where the sea “blows” powerfully through karstic chimneys carved into the rock.

🔹 Pría Blowholes: A Unique Natural Phenomenon

The Pría Blowholes, located on the cliffs near Llames de Pría, are one of the most impressive geological phenomena on the Asturian coast.

When the sea is rough and the tide rises, water enters underground galleries and shoots out like a geyser, accompanied by a roar that sounds like thunder.

They are especially recommended to visit on stormy days or when there is strong surf.
