🏞️ Lakes of Covadonga: Complete Guide to Visiting Them in Asturias

The iconic Lakes of Covadonga, located in the western massif of the Picos de Europa, are among the most spectacular landscapes in northern Spain. This natural site consists of two glacial lakes: Lake Enol and Lake Ercina.

🌊 Lake Enol: the first you’ll encounter when ascending from Covadonga. It sits at 1,000 meters altitude and is the larger of the two.

🌄 Lake Ercina: located at 1,100 meters altitude, surrounded by alpine meadows and offering breathtaking views.

Both lakes are within the Picos de Europa National Park, so there are very clear conservation rules:

🚫 Swimming, fishing, and boating are prohibited.

🐾 Pets are allowed, always with respect for the environment.

🏕️ Camping is not permitted, although you can spend the night without a tent or camper van.

🚗 Private vehicle access is restricted during peak season. On those days, you can only go up by public transport or authorized taxi.

📅 Access regulation:

During Easter, summer, and holiday weekends, the road is closed between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. (in winter until 7:00 p.m.). On those dates, the public transport service from Cangas de Onís and Covadonga is active.
