65th Sella Descent
In 2001, the International Descent of the Sella confirmed its status as a major global event, with 1,229 paddlers from 21 countries taking part. The legendary duo Julio Martínez and Rafael Quevedo extended their dominance with a fourth consecutive victory, clocking a time of 1h 10min 16sec and securing a comfortable lead over runners-up Walter Bouzán and Alberto Llera.
In K1, Asturian paddler Manuel Busto showcased his deep knowledge of the Sella and exceptional physical condition, edging out Federico Vega (Sirio) by just one second in a thrilling finish.
The 2001 Sella Descent wasn’t just a race—it was a vibrant Asturian festival that drew thousands of spectators, reinforcing its reputation as one of the world’s premier river marathon events.
