52nd Descent of the Sella
The 1988 International Descent of the Sella was marked by extraordinary river conditions: five days before the event, heavy rainfall dramatically increased the river’s flow, creating spectacular and much faster racing conditions.
🌧️ Nature takes center stage
The Sella ran with unusual force, offering a much quicker course than usual and demanding top-level skill and endurance from all paddlers.
Japan, the guest country
As a special highlight, Japan was the officially dedicated guest nation. Their participants charmed the crowd by handing out traditional origami paper cranes, adding a cultural and friendly touch to the festivities.
Record-breaking performances
This edition set all-time records in both K2 and K1 categories:
-
K2: victory went to Andersson and Jacoby (Australia) with an impressive time of 1 h 06 min 38 s, beating strong favorites Antonio Soto and Rafael Hernanz as well as the Chalupsky brothers, who had won the previous two editions.
-
K1: local paddler Juan Carlos Posada, from Ribadesella, claimed victory with a record time of 1 h 15 min 25 s.
1988 was a truly memorable edition, not only for the challenging and spectacular conditions but also for the high level of competition and the festive, international spirit that defines the Sella.
