International Sella River Descent

1976

40th Sella Descent

In 1976, the International Sella Descent stood out once again as one of Asturias’ premier sporting events, attracting nearly 400 boats for a day of thrilling competition.

The guest of honour serving as event president was Pedro Luis Gorostegui, silver medalist in sailing at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, lending significant prestige and international appeal to the race.

On the competitive front, Herminio Menéndez and Esteban Celorrio delivered a remarkable performance in the Ribadesella estuary. By switching to “a piragua” in the final stretches, they managed to overtake the strong Infiesto duo, González-Somoano. The winning time was 1h 19 min 39 sec, with a 45-second lead over their closest challengers.

The 1976 Sella Descent once again embodied its true spirit: sport, tradition, and fierce competition in one of Asturias’ most iconic natural settings.
