39th Descent of the Sella
In 1975, the International Descent of the Sella took place true to its traditional spirit, although for the second consecutive year without the presence of its charismatic founder, Dionisio de la Huerta. Even so, the “Dionisio style” remained intact: anthems were played, flags were raised, and the classic starting verses were recited, keeping the ceremonial spirit alive as an essential part of the Fiesta de las Piraguas.
That year, 394 canoes and kayaks lined up at the start—a remarkable figure for the time, reaffirming the event’s international and popular appeal. Officially presiding over the race was D. Alfonso Álvarez de Miranda, Spain’s Minister of Industry, who led the honorary committee and lent institutional weight to the event.
In the sporting competition, victory went to the team from Lugo, Alberto Campos and J. A. Fernández, who completed the route from Arriondas to Ribadesella in 1 h 19 min 10 sec, setting a strong and consistent pace. One of the most striking highlights of the year was the performance of the young duo from Cangas de Onís, Ricardo Soto Zaragoza and Ángel Somoano, who at just 15 and 16 years old secured an impressive fourth place overall, showcasing the next generation of Asturian paddling talent.
The 1975 Descent of the Sella once again blended tradition, sport, youth, and festive atmosphere, drawing large crowds along the riverbanks from Arriondas to Ribadesella and keeping alive the legacy of Spain’s greatest canoeing celebration.
