International Sella River Descent

1967

31st Descent of the Sella

In 1967, the International Descent of the Sella continued to cement its reputation as Spain’s premier whitewater canoeing event. This year featured the visit of Juan Antonio Samaranch, then Spain’s National Delegate for Physical Education and Sports, who was captivated by the atmosphere and beauty of the Sella. His interest would help strengthen the race’s national and international profile in the years that followed.

Another milestone was the first official participation of the South African team, marking the beginning of a tradition in which South Africa would regularly send strong crews to compete, reinforcing the truly international character of the event.

On the competitive side, Pedro Cuesta and José Perurena claimed victory, setting a new course record of 1h 18min 55sec, showcasing the technical and athletic progress of Spanish paddlers. Notably, José Perurena would go on to become one of the sport’s leading figures, eventually serving as President of the International Canoe Federation (ICF).

The festive atmosphere, with traditional Sella hymns and verses, alongside growing international participation, solidified the race’s status as a National Tourist Interest Festival and a world-class highlight on the marathon canoeing calendar.
