International Sella River Descent

1963

27th Descent of the Sella

In 1963, the Sella race strengthened its festive and cultural identity. That year, the Asturian vest was officially added to the traditional montera picona hat and flower necklaces, completing the official Sella costume worn by participants and fans—a symbol of Asturias’ blend of sport and tradition.

Participation reached 200 paddlers, marking steady growth and the event’s international appeal.

In the sporting results, victory went to the Swedish pair Lingfors and Wimblad, who set a new record with 1 hour, 23 minutes, and 6 seconds, highlighting the high level of competition and strong foreign presence.

The 1963 edition confirmed the Sella’s reputation as a unique spectacle, with the Tren Fluvial (the Sella River Train) already a tradition, and thousands of spectators joining the celebrations before, during, and after the race, cementing its fame as a key summer event in Asturias.
