25th Descent of the Sella
The Silver Jubilee of the Descent of the Sella was celebrated in 1961, marking 25 years of history and tradition in Asturias’ most iconic canoeing event. Although there had been plans to hold a 13th Popular Descent with massive open participation, that promise ultimately faded into memory.
A notable new tradition was introduced: the flag of the winning country would be flown at the Monument to the Victors, highlighting the event’s growing international character.
On the sporting side, Denmark achieved its first absolute victory with the pair Lund Hansen and Georgenssen, finishing in 1 hour, 24 minutes, and 44 seconds. In the K1 category, the winner was Rudi Grünberg of Germany, underscoring the Sella’s increasingly competitive and international nature.
