International Sella River Descent

1946

9th Descent of the Sella

Held on August 10, this edition saw 26 canoes compete. The procession following the paddlers was remarkable for the time: 285 cars, 23 coaches, 400 bicycles, and about 50 motorcycles, showing the event’s growing popularity.

The Fluvial Train expanded its service, announcing departures from Llanes, Gijón, and Oviedo, making it easier for fans to attend.

As an interesting note, the Ribadesella Town Hall decided to reward the best-placed local pair. That honor went to “Orbayu II”, paddled by Armando Menéndez and Juan Palacio, who won with a time of 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Additionally, the Town Hall gifted a new canoe to Manuel González and Jesús Villar, since their old canoe, “Plátano”, was worn out and abandoned, retiring from service after the race
