How It All Began: History and Legends of Fishing in the Sella River

🎣 History of Fishing in the Sella River

The origins of fishing in the Sella River date back to Prehistory. 🐚 The first inhabitants of the region used simple harpoons and spear-throwers made from animal bones to catch fish in its clear waters.

During the Middle Ages, 🎩 monasteries and noble estates like Villanueva, Coviella, Estrada, Nevares, and the Palace of Faes controlled access to the best salmon pools along the Sella. Fishing required their permission, and each estate had its own designated stretch. For example, the House of Faes dominated the pools between Arriondas and Triongo.

Fishing was so abundant that it’s said the servants of these estates used to request “not to eat salmon every day.” 🐟

It was in the 20th century when these exclusive fishing rights were abolished and access to the Sella River was democratized. Since then, this river has not only remained a natural paradise but has also become a symbol of Asturian identity and a living legacy of the fishing history and culture of northern Spain.
