6th Descent of the Sella
Held on August 10, this edition is noted for including a team from Santander, showing the event’s growing reach beyond Asturias.
Sadly, it was also marked by the first serious accident in the race’s history. The Arriondas team, Vicente Cuesta and José Antonio Iglesias, capsized near Margolles while among the leading positions. Although the river was barely one meter deep, José Antonio suffered a fatal congestion. He was rushed to Ribadesella, but despite all efforts, his life could not be saved.
In sporting results, Antonio Caviedes won in K1, marking the second and last time a K1 would take overall victory in the Sella.
