How It All Began: History and Legends of Fishing in the Sella River

🎣 History of Fishing in the Sella River

The origins of fishing in the Sella River go back to prehistoric times. 🐚 The first settlers in the region used harpoons and spears made from animal bones to catch fish in its crystal-clear waters.

During the Middle Ages, 🎩 monasteries and noble houses such as Villanueva, Coviella, Estrada, Nevares, and the Palace of Faes controlled access to the best salmon fishing spots along the Sella. Their permission was required to fish, and each family had its own designated stretch. The Casa de Faes, for example, dominated the pools between Arriondas and Triongo.

Fishing was so abundant that it is said that the servants of these houses would complain about having to eat salmon every day. 🐟

It wasn’t until the 20th century that exclusive fishing privileges were abolished and access to the Sella River was democratized. Since then, this waterway has come to represent not only a natural paradise, but also a symbol of Asturian identity and a living legacy of the fishing history and culture of northern Spain.
