Laurel in the Sella River – Uses, Properties, and Tradition

🌿 Laurel (Laurus nobilis): Sacred Symbol and Useful Plant of the Sella River Basin

The laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) is an evergreen tree belonging to the Lauraceae family, highly valued both for its culinary uses and its ancient symbolism. In the temperate, humid areas of the Sella River basin, this tree finds an ideal environment to grow in traditional gardens, shady riverbanks, and well-drained soils.

Its stems are upright with dark bark, covered in entire, alternate, lanceolate leaves with a leathery texture and characteristic shine. The wavy edges of its green leaves make it easily recognizable in the landscapes of Cangas de Onís, Arriondas, and Amieva.

Laurel flowers are unisexual. The male flowers have between 8 and 14 stamens, while the female flowers feature 4 well-defined petals. Its fruit is a black berry that ripens in autumn and provides food for local birds.

✨ Tradition, Mythology, and Spirituality

Laurel has been linked to spirituality and victory since ancient times. In Greek mythology, it was dedicated to Apollo, the god of health, medicine, and poetry. It symbolized wisdom, inspiration, and purification.

👑 Roman emperors were crowned with laurel branches.

🏆 Victors of battles or games received laurel crowns as a sign of honor.

🌿 In Christian tradition, Jesus Christ was welcomed with laurel and palm branches upon entering Jerusalem.

Even today, in villages around the Sella, laurel is used as a natural protective charm, hung in doorways or rural kitchens.
