International Descent of the Sella 1980

44th Sella Descent

In 1980, the 50th anniversary of the Descenso Internacional del Sella was celebrated—an especially symbolic edition that restored the event’s original spirit thanks to the return of Dionisio de la Huerta, the founder of the race back in 1930. His official comeback was a major attraction: with him returned the recitation of the traditional verses from the Arriondas bridge, the humor, and the festive tone that had been somewhat lost in previous years.

Attendance broke all previous records. While popular legend spoke of a caravan of 25,000 vehicles heading toward Ribadesella, official traffic records documented traffic jams stretching over 12 km along the national road between Arriondas and Ribadesella, confirming the massive turnout.

On the water, it was also a landmark edition. Over 1,254 paddlers in more than 800 canoes competed, with international delegations from France, Portugal, Germany, and the United Kingdom further confirming the event’s global appeal. The river’s flow was excellent after heavy rains earlier in the week, making for a fast, spectacular descent that drew thousands of spectators along the banks and aboard the iconic Tren Fluvial.

A major new feature was the introduction of the final romería (picnic celebration) at the Campos de Oba in Llovio, where participants and spectators gathered after the finish to share cider, food, and traditional music. This addition would become a staple of future editions, giving the Sella its characteristic mix of competitive sport and authentic Asturian festivity.

In short, the 1980 edition marked a true rebirth of the “Sellero” spirit, reinforcing the race’s popular roots, international character, and deep cultural significance for Asturias.
