77th Descent of the Sella
The year of the “almost TV blackout”… according to the organizers, a drop in sponsorships made the live broadcast by TVE unfeasible. The outrage among locals was clear, and eventually the TPA (Asturias’ regional TV) aired the Sella live.
That year marked the 50th anniversary of the Sella life jacket, introduced by Dionisio de la Huerta during the 27th Descent as part of the traditional Sellero attire.
After setting the pace over the entire 20 km course, Bouzán and Fernández Fiuza won as they entered the Ribadesella estuary, ahead of the pairs of Emilio Merchán and Iván Alonso and Julio Martínez Gómez and José Julián Becerro, who finished second and third respectively.
The Zamoran Emilio Merchán and the Galician Iván Alonso, fresh European champions and reigning marathon K-2 world champions, couldn’t steal victory from Bouzán and Fiuza, who led the race from start to finish.
In K-1, ten-time marathon world champion Manuel Busto claimed victory, followed by Rafa Carril from Gijón and Luis Martínez Pérez from Pravia.
