78th Sella Descent
dropcap]W[/dropcap]alter Bouzán and Álvaro Fernández Fiuza claimed their fourth consecutive victory in the 2014 International Sella Descent, confirming their dominance in this legendary race.
This year’s slower pace led to a thrilling group competition: six boats shared the lead for much of the course, staying together until the final five kilometers in the Ribadesella estuary, where the incoming tide slowed their progress.
The lead pack remained tightly contested until the last kilometer, when a decisive surge by Bouzán and Fiuza broke the group apart, securing them a convincing win in the final sprint. Emilio Merchán and Iván Alonso finished second, while the South African pair took third place with nearly identical times.
In K1, the battle was just as intense, featuring a close sprint between Manuel Busto and Kiko Vega. Busto ultimately took the win and announced his retirement from competitive racing in the Sella, promising to return only to “enjoy it” as he did as a child with his grandparents.
