Since 1996, a lively delegation of around 140 people from Cangas de Onís travels every year to Arriondas to take part in the Descenso Internacional del Sella parade with their group, “Los Botijos”.
This peña has become a true icon of the pre-race festivities. Each year, members dedicate weeks to designing and building an original, colorful, and noisy themed float that always wins applause and laughter as it rolls by. Their creativity shines not just in the construction, but in the infectious party atmosphere they bring to the streets.
Surrounding the float, dozens of participants dance along wearing their signature green vests and shirts, a color now instantly recognizable as the symbol of Cangas de Onís. This local identity is a big part of why “Los Botijos” are so eagerly anticipated year after year.
The parade itself, held on the first Saturday of August before the start of the race, is much more than a warm-up to a sporting event. It’s a genuine folk celebration, blending bagpipe bands, local cultural associations, dance groups, and creative costumes in a joyful tribute to Asturian tradition and hospitality.
“Los Botijos” perfectly embody that spirit. With their humor, creativity, and unwavering commitment, they’ve become one of the parade’s star attractions, adding energy, music, and true Sella spirit to the event.
If you’re in Arriondas on the big day, don’t miss the parade. It’s the perfect way to soak up the unique mix of canoeing, music, and Asturian culture that makes the Descenso del Sella such an unforgettable experience.
