Geology of the Sella River: Origin, Rocks and Formation

The Sella River Basin and Its Mountains

🏞️ Geology and Basin of the Sella River

The Sella River basin covers an area of 1,200 km², crossing some of the most spectacular geological landscapes in Asturias. From its source in the mountains to its mouth in the Cantabrian Sea, the river carves valleys, gorges, and limestone formations of great geological value.

🌄 Source of the Sella: Fuente del Infierno

The Sella River rises at the foot of Alto del Pontón (1,290 m), in the well-known Fuente del Infierno, a karstic landscape surrounded by peaks such as:

  • La Rocha
  • Jario
  • Pozúa
  • Peña Mora
  • Cresta del Niajo

From there, the river flows for 73 km to its mouth in Ribadesella, winding through limestone formations and crossing transverse mountain ridges.

⛰️ The Beyos Gorge: Living Geology

One of the most spectacular sections of the Sella is the Beyos Gorge, a 12 km canyon nestled between the Frailón and Monxines cliffs. This narrow passage creates the illusion that the river vanishes between the rocks.

On the left rises Mota Cetín, the watershed dividing the Sella and Piloña basins.

To the right, the Sierra de Vis and Amieva sculpt the middle valley with striking contrasts of elevation and geological materials.

🌿 The Middle Basin: Viewpoints and Formations

In the central part of the valley, highlights include:

From Corona del Castiello (left bank) and Pico la Corona (right bank), you can admire the merging of the river with the Cantabrian Sea.

Cerro de Fayes, offering panoramic views of Arriondas and the entire middle basin of the Sella.
